(April 1, 2016) “Heroes are all young and beautiful. The image of the soldier between rhetoric and reality 1870-1935” is the title of the exhibition opened at the Great Hall of the Marco Polo Institute in Grado. Organized by the Office for Scientific Dissemination of the University of Trieste, with funding from the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Museums of Friuli Venezia Giulia, “Heroes are all young and beautiful” is a photo documentary exhibition that aims to compare the official iconography of the Great War with the sense of insecurity, destruction and escaped death conveyed by the images that escaped censorship and taken on battle sites. Edited by Massimo De Grassi, Professor of Contemporary Art History at the Department of Humanities of the University of Trieste, the exhibition features ten panels dedicated to each of the stages leading from renaissance painting – that accompanied the shaping of the italian nation – to the so-called “monumentomania” which, in the thirties, flaunted pride for the difficult victory behind obsequious images to the new fascist rhetoric.
