Naypyidaw – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, has arrived in Myanmar for a two-day official visit to the Country. The Minister, who is the first member of a Western government to visit Myanmar since the installation of the new government, met the leading representatives of the newly elected government led by the NLD, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aung San Suu Kyi, the President of the Republic, U Htin Kyaw, and the Commander in Chief of the Burmese Armed Forces, Gen. Min Aung Hlaing. The visit is a strong political signal of support from Italy for the Country’s first democratically elected government in fifty years and, at the same time, a particular gesture of friendship by the new Burmese leadership welcoming Minister Gentiloni today.”I thank the Italian Minister for his visit just six days since my installation. Mr Gentiloni represents Italy because he was democratically elected in free elections, so no one more than him can appreciate the value of the democratic process taking place in Burma”, said Aung San Suu Kyi. “Italy – underlined Mr Gentiloni – has confided in the democratic process that led to free elections, under the guidance of Aung San Suu Kyi, and will support every effort made by the new government to achieve peace and unity in the Country”.(9colonne)
