Miami. At 51, this Finmeccanica employee from Torre Annunziata trains by swimming 20-22 kilometres of open sea every day. He will attempt to swim across the strait separating Cuba and Florida in mid September. It is a harrowing feat for anybody —72 hours to cover 170 kilometres non-stop — with only mineral salts for refreshment. But it is especially impressive from a man who, for fifteen years, has been living with only one leg. Before the main event, next Sunday, Cimmino will participate in an open-sea race in Miami, Swim Miami 2016, organized by the Open Water Swim Association. “It’s a significant race, I’ll have to swim 10 kilometers against professionals: it will be a good way of testing my capabilities. And there’s a lot of enthusiasm around my plan, on the part of local institutions, and the well-established local Italian community,” stated Cimmino, who is now a regular on beaches formerly frequented by Hemingway, where he trains each morning and afternoon.
