Brussels. “Pompeii, today, is a symbol of Italy rolling up its sleeves and making good on its commitments to the international community. Not long ago, and albeit often for opportunistic reasons, this archeological site was in the newspapers the world over, shown collapsing and crumbling. Today, the same international opinion instead recognizes Italy’s ability to imagine and carry through on projects like the Great Prompeii Project. A large and accurate team effort was made, with little fanfare. This accomplishment, I am convinced, will encourage us to overcome other major challenges affecting our cultural heritage.” This was the statement by Italy’s Undersecretary of State for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Antimo Cesaro, who today received European Commission delegates Charlina Vitcheva, Christopher Todd and Lucio Paderi, as well as Superintendant Massimo Osanna and Director General Luigi Curatoli. This marks the symbolic start of the second phase of the project, which has already been ratified by the Commission. Prefect Gabriella Tramonti and Dora Di Francesco, Autorità di Gestione PON Cultura e Sviluppo were also present. (9colonne)
