(April 28th, 2016) “The Sistine Chapel. A history of Masterpiece” is the title of the conference organised by Sabrina Favaro to be held on Wednesday, May 4th (18:30) at the Italian Cultural Institute in Rabat. The event is organised by the ICI and is part of a series of lectures titled “Monuments of Italy”. Everyone is familiar with Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel, that occupies pages in history books and easily found on posters and postcards. However, few are aware of the origins of this masterpiece. Michelangelo was already a mature and affirmed artist when he was summoned by Pope Julius II to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel on which he worked from 1508 to 1512 and subsequently on the wall behind the alter for “The Last Judgment” on request of Pope Paul III. The splendour of the frescoes, however, lied not only in the beauty of the piece but also in the intellectual complexity of the spirit they were painted with. During the conference, through the examination of some of the works by the famous sculptor, poet and painter, an understanding of the development of the artistic, philosophical and religious of an undisputed genius of the Renaissance will be achieved.
