(26 September 2016) Venice is a nostalgic place. It has inspired artists as well as its visitors over the course of the centuries. The palazzos immersed in the sea and the architecture on the Grand Canal. They give the impression of a spectacle created to provoke an artistic reaction. From 1500 until the beginning of the twentieth century, painters have celebrated Venice as if it were a stage-set: water, gondolas and processions have always offered a wonderful spectacle to the public. Their vision of the city has contributed to the formation of Venice’s image. Painters Vittore Carpaccio, Canaletto, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, William Turner, John Ruskin, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Claude Monet, Wassily Kandinsky, Gerhard Richter and Candida Höfer are all featured in the exhibition “Venice. City of Artists” at the Bucerius Kunst Forum of Hamburg. It is dedicated to the Pan-European response to Venice from the sixteenth century to the present.
