London. A study on the clinical result of decompressive craniectomy co-authored by Professor Franco Servadei, the head of Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology at the University Hospital and adjunct Professor at the University of Parma; has just been released on the “New England Journal of Medicine”. The study is titled “Trial of decompressive Craniectomy for Traumatic Intracranial Hypertension”. It is the result of a major European multicentre collaboration. The intervention of cranial bone decompression to decrease the intracranial pressure has been in use for many years. While there is no certainty on the physiological effects of the procedure (reduction of pressure within the skull), there are none on its clinical results: no certainty, that is, that the prognosis of patients undergoing this surgical procedure can be improved. The study conducted has focused on this aspect. (9Colonne)
