(13 October, 2016) The exhibition “Grand Tour Italia”, curated by Franco Fontana, will open this evening at the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade at 18:30. “Grand Tour Italia” arrives in Serbia after its premiere in Split, Rijeka, Zagreb and in Lignano and Sabbiadoro in Italy. As posted on the ICI website, the exhibition was developed in collaboration with CRAF (Research and Photographic Archive Centre); the extraordinary institution of Friuli Venezia Giulia, based in Spilimbergo, dedicated to photography. The exhibition runs from October 14 until November 4. Fontana (born in Modena in 1933) since the 1970s, has been working towards finding an essential compositional style based on colourful painted backgrounds. Italian landscapes appear to be wrapped in a translucent atmosphere that recalls renaissance motifs through his nearly perfect geometric shots. Bright yellows, greens and blues fill up the space. They are the language of a photograph that works around the poetics of colour that ultimately transforms nature into abstract forms. Fontana’s work becomes internationally renowned thanks to the Skyline monograph (1978). Fontana taught photography to elementary school children in New York for CRAF and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of New York in 1999. He collaborated with the Centre Georges Pompidou with French and Japanese Ministers for Culture and he received an honorary degree in design from the Polytechnic of Turin in 2006. Since the 1970s, he has published more than 40 books in Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, the United States and Japan. Since then, he has also exhibited his work in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world. (Red).
