(18 January 2017) Rome is not all ancient ruins and baroque churches. In the 1930s, architect Marcello Piacentini, among others, created the EUR. This will be a topic of Christine Beese from the Free University of Berlin conference held at the Italian Cultural Institute on Wednesday 8 February at 19:00. The young art historian will present her research to the ICI on one of the 20th century’s greatest architects. Defining Piacentini simply as an architect is restrictive seeing as he was an urban planner, artist, journal director, university professor, and coordinator of great public works. He was also a writer, critic, and academic. “Marcello Piacentini- Urbanistica moderna in Italia” is the title of Beese’s research which consists in analysing Piacentini’s work demonstrating how he integrated various European styles in his search of an Italian architectural style. This event was envisioned to discover the star architect of the Fascist era, the creator of a completely new style that changed the Italian landscape propelling her into a modern era. (Red)
