(2 February 2017) The presentation of the Trieste Harbour at the Italian Embassy in Vienna was organised by the Italian-German Chamber of Commerce Delegation for Austria in collaboration with the port authority of the Western Adriatic coast. It permitted for the establishment of the basis for a relaunch of Austrian trade to and from Trieste. In 2016, the port of Trieste appears to be the first one in Italy with a circulation of cargo totalling in more than 59 million tonnes as underlined by the President of the Eastern Adriatic Port Authority, Zeno D’Agostino. The Italian Ambassador to Vienna, Giorgio Marrapodi opened the conference followed by the President of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Debora Serracchiani’s and the Secretary General of the Italian-German Chamber of Commerce, Alessandro Marino’s remarks. “In this event I see an important building block towards a strong and innovative commercial partnership capable of triggering multiple benefits for our respective territories. Our common historical legacy identified Trieste as the most strategic for Central Europe. This role was attributed to Trieste also due to the recent reform of the Italian port system” underlined Serracchiani. Secretary Alessandro Marino instead stated: “At this time Austria lets many exports and imports through ports of Northern Europe who hold a 65% market share in exports and 44% in imports compared to the total cargo handled by sea. A significant sign shows greater use of links across the North Adriatic has already been noticed in 2016, to the point that, for the first time the port of Trieste is among the top six European ports used by Austrian operators “.
