Brussels – The European Parliament condemns the brutal oppression by Venezuelan security forces and irregular armed groups against peaceful protests in Venezuela. About 30 people died and many others were injured and arrested while protesting against President Nicolás Maduro’s government. Today the Europarliament urged the Venezuelan authorities to urgently resolve the issue of humanitarian aid in the country, lacking in food and medicine. “For many years we have been witnessing violence, oppression and hunger in Venezuela that the local government has imposed on the population – commented the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani -. We see young students killed in the streets while protesting, desperate people looking for food, children who die in hospitals due to lack of medicines and political opponents who can not run for election or are sent to prison. We see a people kneeling because of a regime that does not respect democracy, rights and at the same time isolates the country from international organizations. I strongly condemn the continued violations of the democratic order in Venezuela. Democracy and the principle of separation of powers must be safeguarded.” (9colonne)
