Brussels. Stefan Wabnitz, Professor of Electromagnetic Fields from the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia, won an ERC Advanced Grant thanks to his project “STEMS – Spatiotemporal multimode complex optical systems”. The project, which received a € 2,084,181.00 grant, will last for 5 years. This is the first time a researcher from the University of Brescia wins an ERC project whose average success rate is 9.6% worldwide (2016). The success rate for Italians – 16 out of a total of 231 participants – is 7%. The success rate of Italian Host Institutions – 12 out of 231 – is 5.2%. The “STEMS” project will develop the consequences of a new physics principle that was recently introduced by Professor Stefan Wabnitz and his collaborators at the University of Limoges and Dijon in France – the auto-recovery of spatial consistency of light beams propagating in nonlinear and multimode fibre optics.
