Toronto. “The seismic events that hit Central Italy in August and October 2016 stirred profound emotion and affection in the one and a half million Canadians of Italian origin, in the federal, provincial, and municipal authorities of Canada and throughout the Canadian people who have been working to provide concrete assistance to the areas affected by the earthquake. Among the various initiatives organised by eminent personalities of the Italian community in Canada, I would like to mention ‘The Italy Earthquake Relief Fund’ (TIERF), formerly referred to as the ‘Central Italy Earthquake Relief Fund’, which has raised over 550,000 Canadian dollars (about €370,000) to support long-term reconstruction activities for communities affected by seismic events”. This was a statement released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano in light of the “Lunch with Sergio Marchionne” – the closing event of the fundraising campaign organised by TIERF, to be held on 12 May in Toronto, also attended by the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Ontario Kathleen Wynne, Mayor of Amatrice Sergio Pirozzi, and Mayor of Norcia, Nicola Alemanno.
