London. How long will the earthquake last? This is one of the questions that researchers are often faced with at the beginning of each earthquake. A new analysis on aftershocks allowed scientists to demonstrate that extensional settings have longer periods and higher number of aftershocks compared to contractional settings. The study, titled “Longer aftershocks duration in extensional tectonic settings”, conducted by a team of researchers from INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vuclanologia – National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology), the CNR-IREA Institute, and the Sapienza University of Rome was published on “Scientific Reports”.
