New York. In many countries Labour day is celebrated on May 1st unlike in North America where it takes place on the first Monday in September. The event originated with a General Assembly of the Knights of Labor in New York City on September 5th, 1882. This and other topics will be discussed at the Italian Institute of Culture in New York. The Italian Institute of Culture will host the study conference “Primo Maggio: Festa del Lavoro” (May 1st: Labour Day) on Monday, April 30th. The event is organised by the Bruno Buozzi Foundation in collaboration with the Italian Consulate and the IIC. This study conference, looking at Italy and the world, on one hand proposes the historical reconstruction of the May 1st event and on the other, it recalls the roots of a popular spring festival. The connection with the development of the conquests of the work force in the twentieth century by the reformist social-democracy and socialism brings the content of the celebration to relevancy.
