(30 April 2018) Giulio Busi is a Professor at the Freie Universität in Berlin and President of the Palazzo Bondoni Pastorio Foundation. He wrote about Jewish mysticism, Renaissance history, and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s philosophy. On May 7th he will hold the conference titled “Michelangelo, Mito e Solitudine Del Rinascimento” (Michelangelo, Myth and Solituade of the Renaissance) at the Italian Institute of Culture in Berlin. Generous with the humble, impatient with rivals, very attached to money, ascetic, and transgressive, Michelangelo Buonarroti is the first truly modern artist; able to oppose everything and everyone, including pontiffs, just to express himself. Sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, he was highly acclaimed, overpaid, imitated and hated during his long life (he died at almost 89 years). Too often, he was alone. By necessity, by choice, by destiny. Without letting himself be intimidated nor dazzled by the myth of the absolute genius, Giulio Busi follows Michelangelo’s traces, who felt out of place both in the workshops of painters and sculptors and in the salons of the princes.
