Baghdad. Dr. Fabio Massimo Abenavoli is an Italian doctor who travels to Africa and the Middle East to operate on children with facial malformations and wounds. Today, after thirty years of surgery, he has a precise goal: to succeed in training an even better surgeon. “I would be a bad teacher if none of my students surpassed me,” says the founder of “Emergenza Sorrisi”. Thanks to his team of volunteer doctors and nurses, the non-profit organization chaired by Fabio Massimo Abenavoli has given back smiles to over 4,400 children. “Emergenza Sorrisi” has in fact, now been in charge of treating children with cleft lip, cleft palates, facial malformations, burns, war traumas, cataracts and other disabling diseases in developing countries or countries with internal conflict. Many hot places on the planet where Abenavoli and his team bring their help: Benin, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Somalia, Haiti, and Senegal. (9Colonne)
