Addis Ababa – The President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mulatu Teshome, has rewarded Italy’s work with a certificate that recognises the support of AICS for the consolidation of the Ethiopian system for civil registration. Also thanks to the Italian contribution of €2.8 million, over 800,000 newborns now have access to the system of civil registrations in the regional states of Oromia and SNNP. Italian support aims to guarantee fundamental rights and protection for newborns and children, reducing cases of exploitation and marginalisation. The project, implemented by UNICEF Ethiopia and Italian NGOs, has achieved great results and has contributed to the efforts of the Ethiopian authorities, which have led to an increase in the registration rate of children under one year of age, from 3% in 2016 to 18% in 2018.
