Vienna – A film retrospective on Fellini and Olmi – two of the most extraordinary directors of Italian cinema – will be held at the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna from January 10th to February 28th. The first is Federico Fellini (1920-1993), who has become one of the most famous filmmakers in the world thanks to films such as La strada (1954) and La dolce vita (1960). His style is so unmistakable that he gave rise to the adjective “Fellini”, which describes a fantastic (and imaginative) excess that goes beyond the simple grotesque. Less popular, but not less important, is the work of Ermanno Olmi, recently deceased (1931-2018). Already with his debut films Il Posto e I Fidanzati, the director proved to be a key figure in Italian cinema in the early 60s. During his career, he had great international success with works such as “L’albero degli zoccoli” (The Tree of Wooden Clogs) (1978) which won a Golden Palm at Cannes, or “La leggenda del santo bevitore” (Legend of the Holy Drinker) (1988) which won a Golden Lion in Venice, based on the homonymous story by Joseph Roth. The event was organised by the Australian Film Museum in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture in Vienna. (9Colonne)
