(Apr. 10) – A hundred years ago, the Italian food excellence would sunk together with Titanic. This is what reveals of Gabriele Arlotti, Italian journalist with a unique passion the Parmigiano Reggiano’s history. The dramatic sinking, caused by the impact with an iceberg, brought the death of 1523 of 2223 passengers on board, including the 800 crew members. The tragedy, happened in the night between April 14 and 15, 1912, off the coast of the Atlantic, is commemorated in these days. Arlotti has looked into the loading card of the White Star Line ocean liner and he has discovered the presence of Italian food excellence, including 30 wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano. “In all the world, at this very hour – says Arletti -, there are dinner based on the exact Titanic’s menus, where the presence of Parmigiano Reggiano and other Italian foods and dishes stands out.” A small discovery that can be explained in two ways, as the reporter does: “I those days, Parmigiano Reggiano followed the men, their immigration, and, thanks to its quality, it became an irreplaceable ingredient. This explains the considerable amount of cheese on board. And it just remarks the massive presence of Italians catering on board, including the Class I restaurants run by Luigi Gatti.” (Peg)
