(Apr. 25) “I would recommend to everyone a period abroad and not only in this particular historical moment. I think that meeting different people, cultures and contexts is very educational and exciting for young men and women who want to grow. And London is one of the best cities if you want to do an experience in this way.” So says Alessia Zenere, 30 years from Thiene, near Vicenza, now in London to ‘start the international development’ of the company she works for. “I studied in Gorizia. I attended the Faculty of International and Diplomatic Sciences. Then I decided to pursue a Masters in International Development and Cooperation and a class on renewable energy. I moved to London last December.” Alessia tells about her job: “We deal with the provision of facilities for the production of energy from renewable sources. The difficulties and uncertainties of the Italian legal framework prompted us to seek new markets. I am here to explore foreign markets, not just the British one, and to move their first steps towards international activity. And London is an excellent place for two main reasons: the presence of many investors and the easy connection with other countries.” About the ‘new migration’, Alessia says: “I think this new migration is very far from the other Italian emigrations, like those of our grandparents. I would say that today we are privileged. We have the opportunity to stay in touch with everyone through the Internet and we can invent a job thanks to new technologies. Not to mention that we can travel low cost. Not bad, I’d say.” Alessia has also faced difficulties: “In London I had to immediately deal life’s cost, which is very expensive. Lucky I already knew English, even though here the required level is obviously very high. I took some lessons and tried to speak as much as possible with English people. The worst that could happen – concludes Alessia with a smile – is that you have to ask someone to repeat something.” (PO/Gil/Peg)
