(May 2) – The Ran emergency initiative continues with enthusiasm in Guatemala. The program is funding 12 projects to reduce the exposure to food, nutrition and environment of vulnerable Guatemalan groups (especially women and children). The last success has been the construction and equipping of the Center for Nutritional Recovery (CRN) that is part of a larger project “Lotta alla denutrizione acuta: un approccio integrato”, funded by the Ran and the Italian Cooperation and implemented the Italian NGO Icu, in collaboration with Guatemalan Ministry of Health. The CRN can be considered an infrastructure model: it has 18 beds, two consultation clinical consultation, a kitchen, an area for training activities, laundry, garden, offices for medical health. Furthermore, it has been designed to ensure adequate insulation to hospitalized children, in order to avoid possible infection. The medical and nursing staff has already begun to operate and the first 5 children suffering from acute malnutrition has been hospitalized. (Red)
