Nov. 20 – GVC flies to New York after its video “Cooperativas de Apurímac”, which describes the Peruvian activities of the Reggio NGO, was selected to participate in the IYC Short Film Festival 2012, scheduled for today at the UN headquarters during the closing ceremony of the International Year of Cooperatives. “Our work – says Patrizia Santillo, President of GVC – is giving a hand to the local populations so they can recover. To achieve this, it’s necessary to join forces, combining economic needs and social responsibility: a major challenge for everyone, not only the so-called third world.” The video was directed by Miko Meloni in one of the poorest regions of Peru, where GVC works to improve – through the promotion of co-operatives – the lives of hundreds of families. In past years, six cooperatives were born thanks to GVC’s work, and the documentary tells their story. The cooperatives are: 30 teenagers providing trekking services in the archaeological sites; an organic fertilizer production cooperative; one that raises guinea pigs; and one that manufactures aprons for secondary school students. GVC also supported the creation of an association of 60 agricultural producers.
