Jan. 3 – A short film dedicated to a theme dramatically relevant for America: ordinary people who suddenly lose their minds and, armed with a rifle, shoot in the streets and in schools. America, where you can easily buy a weapon, continues to mourn its dead, the last in a series of many being the Sandy Hook school shooting. In fact, just a few months ago a similar story took place outside a movie theater in Colorado. Inspired by these events, the young Giulio Poidomani, originally from Modica (Ragusa) who moved for working reasons to the States, completed the short film “Disruption.” “The story follows a depressed cartoonist who tries to come back to life after a long coma – said Poidomani – At the beginning there is a man with no future, with no life projects: he works on a comic book from the villain’s point of view. It is as if we follow the story of the Joker rather than Batman. And in fact for me Jay, the protagonist, is a bit like Joker, with a worldview of his own. The screenplay was actually born when I heard for the umpteenth time that a man had gone crazy in Los Angeles and, in broad daylight, started shooting in the middle of the street, killing a man. It all happened in one of the busiest intersections in Hollywood, in the world of cinema and fiction. But what happened was, unfortunately, a reality. And then I wondered what could possibly go through the mind of a person who suddenly decides to kill human beings, sometimes their families and children. What makes one sick mind create and generate chaos? Disruption – continues the director – sees a man trying to survive to himself return to his primordial instincts of destruction and death. This sick world he creates is, in his mind, a better world, in which, paradoxically, the prospect of death is a gift because takes his loved ones away from a miserable world full of sorrows and fears: the real world. ‘Disruption’ – concludes Poidomani – seemed like the right word to summarize it all, because it means a sudden abrupt discontinuation, the kind of interruption that can also cause permanent damage.”
