Feb. 5 – Professor Renato Barilli will present on Tuesday, February 12 at 18:30 at the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto his book “The Science of Culture and the Phenomenology of Styles,” published by McGil l- Queen’s University Press and translated by Corrado Federici.
In this essay, Barilli tries to establish a bridge (called “homology”, according to a term proposed by Lucien Goldmann) between the facts of art, considered volatile and subject to the whims of fashion , and the facts of the material culture, in which technology helps adopt a precise method. Long-time experts of the art world have been reluctant to admit such a relationship, considering it degrading, abusive and even binding; however, the essay maintains the contrary: that these two crucial sectors must combine themselves, but they must do so with great judgment, protecting the autonomy rights of art. The day before, on MOnday Feb. 11, Barilli will give a lecture entitled “Science of Culture and Women’s Creativity” from 16.00 to 18.00 at St. Michael’s College Alumni Hall in Toronto. The conference is presented by the Department of Italian Studies – University of Toronto.
