Apr. 16 – The new model for the treatment of type 2 diabetes of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an organization based in Brussels, follows the Italian model developed two years ago by the medical diabetes association (AMD), to “measure” and treat the different profiles of people with diabetes. The organizations presented today in a world premiere in Rome. Antonio Ceriello, vice president of AMD, two years ago developed, with a group of Italian colleagues, a “treatment algorithm” model based on age, duration of disease, risk factors and complications. The model identifies different profiles of disease patterns to enable customized care. In Italy, it has already been tested, validated and transformed into a software available for all doctors on the Amd site. Two years later, the Italian algorithm inspired and deeply characterized the similar tool developed by the International diabetes federation, the international organization that brings together scientific societies and voluntary organizations active in the fight against diabetes. Ceriello has been the coordinator of the international working group composed of twenty experts including two other Italians, Alberto De Micheli and Marco Gallo. Ceriello, on occasion of today’s presentation, pointed out that “diabetes may stand as the prototype of chronic disease; we proposed to the EU to further study similar models and apply them, for example, to cardiovascular diseases or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.”
