May 30 – Enel Green Power began construction on three new wind farms (Curva dos Ventos, Fontes dos Ventos and Modelo) in the Brazilian states of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, in the northeast of the country. Curva dos Ventos is located in the State of Bahia, where EGP is completing the construction of Cristal, Primavera and Sao Judas, the first EGP wind plants in the country. The new farm will another 56 MW to the 90 MW of the three parks under construction, bringing total installed capacity to 146 MW. Fontes dos Ventos and Modelo, which will have an installed capacity of about 80 MW and 56 MW respectively, are the first wind farms in Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte. The three wind power projects, which will require a total investment of €330 million, will provide energy to both the regulated market and the free market thanks to a long-term “Power Purchase Agreement” (PPA) which EGP won after the 2011 “Brazilian New Energy” public tender. The new wind farms will be characterized by high wind and a capacity factor of about 45%, among the highest in the world. Once in operation, they can generate up to more than 770 million kilowatt hours per year, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 350 tons per year. Brazil is among the first countries in the world for the production of renewable energy, with 98,000 MW of installed capacity, corresponding to approximately 85% of total installed capacity in the country.
