July 22 – All is set for the 28th World Youth Day, the international meeting of spirituality and culture promoted by the Pontifical Council for the Laity that will see millions of pilgrims gather in Rio de Janeiro July 23-28. The Italian company Novamont, materials and bio-chemical manufacturer, has developed an experimental project that aims to reduce the production of waste and everything related to them (landfilling, soil and air pollution, emissions of greenhouse gases). Carried out in collaboration with the John Paul II Foundation for the young, the Forum das Americas, the Pontificium Consilium Pro Laicis, the Italian Ministry of the Environment and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, the first trial will take place at the headquarters of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio. The young participants will use only Mater-B, an Italian tableware containing bio-plastics composed of renewable raw materials, completely biodegradable and disposable together with the organic fraction. The wet waste produced will be sent for recycling, thanks to the collaboration of Conrlub, a Rio municipal company that deals with the collection of municipal solid waste. The recycling process will be organized by the Novamont technicians, and delivered to the treatment plant of Caju. “We are proud to give our contribution to the World Youth Day in Rio, combining this moment of high spirituality and communion among people with an initiative to protect the environment. We wish to thank all those who made it possible, in particular, the Pontifical Catholic University who has seized the opportunities in favor of the preservation of Nature,” said Felice Lo Faso, general manager of Novamont.
