Nov. 5 – Italcertifer arrives in Australia for its most distant intercontinental mission. The company, member of the Italian FS Group, will be in charge of certifying the railway network owned by the multinational mining company Rio Tinto. The activity, worth over €1million, will last for two years and will cover the assessment of the System of Control and Command and Signalling, built by Ansaldo – STS which will manage approximately 1,300 km of the 1,500km rail network. Italcertifer was chosen for its skills and knowledge, namely for its experiences with the Ansaldo STS signaling system, a leading Italian company in the industry. The system will allow to optimize rail traffic and avoid delays in cargo delivery. The innovative driverless system will reduce changes in travel time due to the non-uniform behavior of drivers, and will also increase transport capacity from the current 290 million tons / year to 360 million. The Australian rail network, owned by Rio Tinto, is used to transport to the ports of Dampier and Cape Lambert the excavated material in the company’s 15 mines in the Pilbara region, located in the North West of Australia. The minerals, mainly destined to China and Japan, travel on freight trains composed of 236 wagons (about 25,000 tons per transport), propelled by 3 diesel engines.
