Nov. 11 – The Turin-based Intoino startup won this year’s Global Startup Challenge at Istanbul’s 2013 Webit Congress, an international event for the promotion and support of digital markets, tech and telco in the Europe, Middle East and Africa. In the course of the competition, Intoino beat more than 800 global startups. Born in 2012 in Turin during Startup Weekend, Intoino was developed at TreataBit, the incubator for innovative enterprises of the Politecnico di Torino. Intoino is a young company based on DIY market innovation or “maker movement.” The startup developed a “Lego-style” kit with which it is possible to build intelligent electronic devices and connect to the Internet without knowing any electronics or computer science. For example, anyone can build a system that automatically irrigates plants while on vacation, or a device that alerts your smartphone if a door opens. Of the over 8,000 participants and representatives from more than 100 countries, at Webit the Italian team was the only one with an organized and structured representation that held its separate workshop.
