Feb. 17 – Dialogue and cohabitation for effective peace-keeping operations in critical areas. In the self-declared independent state of Somaliland, there is a desire to make peace; and the University of Pisa Sant’Anna is ready to set up a peace-keeping training course in the administrative capital, Hageira. Thanks to professor Andrea de Guttry, lecturer in International Law, there will be a course in “Introduction to peacebuilding and peace support operations for the civilian personnel.” The course’s formula has been tested in various occasions and is the result of these experiences. The initiative is part of the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Directorate for Globalization and General Affairs project in providing technical assistance and training programs, the “Supporto dell’Italia alla componente civile dell’African stand-by force.” The Sant’Anna developed courses for different contexts, including Cameroun, Ghana, Burundi, Rwanda, Egypt, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Andrea de Guttry highlighted the “importance and sensibility of the initiatives in a field that sees Italy engaged in new ways. For Somalia, this is another opportunity to change course and make dialogue and peace prevail.”(Gil)
