(Apr. 30th) – “Computers and Geosciences ” is published in the UK and is one of the most prestigious journals in the field geo-computation. In recent days, it honored Duccio Rocchini, researcher at the Edmund Mach Foundation of Trento. The researcher wrote the best article in ecology computing presenting a series of examples of GIS applications in agricultural areas and natural parks in Trentino. In particular, his article on “Uncertainty in ecosystem mapping by remote sensing” Rocchini showed – in cooperation with researchers from the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, India and Canada – the importance of graphically representing mapping errors in natural and agricultural ecosystems from remote sensing images. “Aerial photographs, satellite images and airborne sensors often have errors related to geometric distortions (shadows, noise in the signal) that must be corrected before you can create maps – explains Rocchini – Without such adjustments, many maps (habitats in reserves or national parks, maps of grape varieties, maps of temperature on the ground) would be of little value to the preservation of our agricultural heritage and natural resources.” (red)
