Bucharest – The European Project M2RES – “From Marginal to Renewable Energy Source Sites,” co-financed by the European Union through the South East Europe Programme and coordinated by ENEA, held its final international conference in Bucharest. Talks focused on “Strategies for the development of renewable energy sources in marginal areas.” The project has seen the participation of partners from seven EU countries (Italy, Slovenia, Greece, Romania , Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria) and non-EU countries (Serbia, Albania and Montenegro). The conference presented the tools, best practices and pilot cases examined and adopted during the project, and highlighted the development lessons and opportunities for 2014-2020 Transnational Cooperation Programme. M2RES’ goal was to quaklify and bring value to the use of marginal lands with targeted investments in the production of renewable energy: abandoned industrial sites, abandoned quarries, ex – military areas, waste dumps… Thanks to public-private partnership, unused land may become the focus of redevelopment projects for the economic return and social benefit of local communities.
