Berlin – The German newspaper Die Welt authored a lengthy report on the Gorgona prison in Tuscany. Special envoy George Desrues defines the initiative as “valuable.” “It’s a very special prison, where inmates, thanks to the remarkable efforts of director Carlo Mazerbo, devote themselves to social and useful activities for their livelihood, but at the same time, for the welfare of the island. The breed farm animals and cultivate different species of plants, fruits and vegetables; since last year, they started a new project involving the production of their own brand of wine.” The praise doesn’t surprise Enrico Rossi, President of Tuscany: “The Gorgona model is an example of how the imprisonment experience may finally comply with the principles and standards set by Beccaria, whose first objective was to recover and reinstate a normal relationship. After much international criticism, Tuscany shows that there is an alternative way in which the State and entrepreneurs can work together to reach this goal.” (9Colonne)
