Paris – Yesterday, the General Assembly of UNESCO declared the agricultural practice of Vite ad Alberobello in Pantelleria an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is the first time the title is given to agricultural practice, recognizing its historical value as well as its identity. The cultivation of grapes on the island shaped the landscape over time, creating one of the most picturesque sceneries in the world. The grape, vine and the particular farming system connected to them are now a distinctive feature of Alberobello. Its cultivation is the extraordinary result of a particular form of agriculture that respects and enhances nature, producing high quality products, admired around the world. The farming system in Alberobello is so unique that it must be defended, protected and enhanced. (9Colonne)
