London – A study led by Giuseppe Testa of the European Institute of Oncology and the University of Milan, performed in collaboration with Giuseppe Merla’s group of the IRCCS Casa Sollieve della Sofferenza in San Giovanni Rotondo, was published in Nature Genetics, one of the most respected scientific journals in the world. The research opens the way for the use of molecular drugs for the treatment of autism and neurodevelopmental mental diseases. The group discovered how dysfunctions in the activity of certain genes, caused by alterations of their “dose” (ie how many copies of the gene are present in the cells), immediately alter the development of the brain, the heart, and facial structures.
