Jan. 20 – The Pietà is certainly Michelangelo’s the best known sculpture, but there are many more, from the Madonna of the Steps to Two wrestlers. And today a photographic exhibition by Aurelio Amendola, photographer known worldwide for hi works, appreciated in Europe and America, leads us in the discovery of the Renaissance artist’s greates works. “The sculptures of Michelangelo through the lens of Aurelio Amendola” is hosted at the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday February 5 and will remain open until Friday 27. The 36 shots by the artist, all in black and white, unexpectedly capture the tragic force unleashed by Michelangelo’s statues. Amendola’s look seems to coincide and overlap with what of the sculptor, observing the statues from different angles, capturing every little mark left by Michelangelo. Through his lens, Amendola can give new life to Michelangelo’s marble, giving them a contemporary art form, more accessible to a wider audience, eliminating the time and geographical boundaries. Last year, 23 large photos depicting Michelangelo’s sculptures had been exhibited in the Medici Chapel in Florence to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the death of the great Renaissance artist. On this occasion, the publisher UTET Grandi Opere-FMR published “Michelangelo, la dotta mano”, a valuable volume sold in limited edition that featured 83 photographs by Amendola.
