Dec. 18 – We have until January 12 to appreciate “The sculptures of Michelangelo through the lens of Aurelio Amendola,” a photographic exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto. The event is held in conjunction with “Michelangelo: Quest for Genius,” an exhibition of 30 drawings from the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, held at the Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto, until January 11. Amendola presents 36 black and white images that capture the unexpected sensuality and tragic force unleashed by Michelangelo’s statues. His goal seems to coincide and overlap with the eye of the sculptor, observing from different angles the marble surfaces. The original works, on display at the Louvre, at the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo, the Pietà Rondanini of Milan, the Ragazzo Accovacciato of St. Petersburg, are refined by Amendola, who gives us an unexpected new point of view on Michelangelo, managing to capture every little mark left by the artist.
