New York – In the United States, 99 percent of Italian-type cheeses are not actually Italian, despite a name that explicitly recalls famous Italian cheese specialties: Ricotta, Mozzarella, Provolone, Asiago, Pecorino Romano, Grana Padano, and even Gorgonzola. Coldiretti analyzed the market and found that “in 2014, the production of Italian cheese imitations in the US reached the record amount of nearly 2,228 million kg, with an exponential growth over the last 30 years. Indeed, Italian-sounding cheeses in the US have exceeded the production of American cheeses such as Cheddar, Colby, Monterrey, and Jack, which in the same year amounted to 2,040 million kg.” (9Colonne)
