June 23 – “Technology is interesting, but instead of calling you on your smartphone, I’d rather twist your stomach by using plastic cups connected with a string.” Francesca Fini is one of the greatest universal exponents of what is called “performance art,” a form of direct, effective communication that immediately strikes the viewer. On the surface, it looks like theater – but it has different expressive codes. Francesca Fini’s performances are known abroad (her work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world) and is now at the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto (496 Huron St., Toronto). The performance by the Roman artist – promoted by the Institute in collaboration with Luminato Festiva – is “Ophelia: a project for an experimental movie” – premieres tomorrow, Wednesday, 24 June at 6:30pm. Fini is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Rome. Her works often evoke social and political issues and are a set in a “lo-fi” technological environment – with homemade tools, audio and live video interacting. Primarily interested in video and live art, Fini also creates pieces by assembling what is left of her performance art. During her participation in the Copycat laboratory of the Luminato Festival, the Italian Cultural Institute will introduce the artist, her work and future project “Ophelia” in collaboration with the Istituto Luce.
