6 August, 2015 – Following the success of the “Macchiaioli” exhibition, the Italian Cultural Institute of New York is preparing to host yet another artistic display. “The Light of Southern Italy” opens on October 8, and will exhibit 34 works by artists from the Italian South, masters of light and color, until November 5. The exhibition, curated by Marco Bertoli, is part – just like that on the Macchiaioli painters – of a project aimed at the re-evaluation and rediscovery of the extraordinary pictorial Italian heritage of the 1800s, and particularly that of southern Italy, little known in the United States. And so, Antonio Mancini’s realism, Francesco Lojacono and Gabriele Smargiassi’s landscapes en plein-air, and the painters of daily life (Filippo Palizzi and Marco De Gregorio) bring their intensity and transport the visitor to the Mediterranean: the excavations in Pompeii, the Vesuvius, the rugged coastline and the humble charm of the locals.
