(29 December 2015) “I am very proud and excited to return as a professor at the University where I graduated and specialized,” states Virgilio Sacchini, currently Full Professor of Surgery at Cornell University in New York and breast surgeon specialist at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, an international excellence center for the care and study of cancer. The Board of Directors of the University “La Statale” of Milan recently voted for a direct call to Sacchini, where he had graduated and specialized 16 years prior. And now, after a considerable amount of American experience crowned with great professional achievements, Sacchini joins the new Department of Oncology and Hematology (DIPO), which brings together all the most important structures in Milan dedicated to the research, diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases and where the Statale recently opened a “Chair of Humanity.” Sacchini’s arrival will coincide with the launch of a network of partnerships for training, clinical and scientific collaborations between the University of Milan and American excellence. This “bridge” between Milan and New York opens for medical students and graduates of La Statale and their American counterparts new opportunities to enjoy quality education both in the US and Italy. Training courses to pass the American qualifying examination will be organized, thus allowing La Statale graduates to complete their clinical training in the best hospitals of the US, while treatment and transnational protocols will be shared between the University of Milan and the two American institutions. “La Statale – said Sacchini – moves in an international context: thanks to the multi-disciplinary nature of its educational format, its Doctors have a basic knowledge that makes them the perfect fit to carry out more complex clinical activities and implement research protocols, all the while keeping the patient and their needs at the center of their work”.
