(15 January 2015) An all-Italian code for a new random number generation algorithm will soon be installed in mobile phones, tablets and computers worldwide. A fundamental function of the web programming language JavaScript has been rewritten using technology developed at the Laboratory for Web Algorithmics (LAW) of the Computer Science Department at the University of Milan La Statale. JavaScript is the language used by all web pages for the creation of dynamic effects, and is the basis of the “Web 2.0”. An important feature of this language is the ability to generate pseudorandom numbers. Sequences of these numbers are critical to create business transactions identifiers, perform certain classes of algorithms, and introduce randomness in games: for example, to extract lottery tickets or choose how to distribute cards in online poker.
