(24 February, 2016) Discovering history in Berlin with a show, inaugurated today – Wednesday, 24 February – that will remain on display until Thursday, March 24, on “Italy and the diplomacy of the Great War. Origins, developments, consequences”. The documents and images that characterize the exhibition (from the official telegrams to the confidential letters, the posters and pamphlets…) offer a detailed reading of the delicate decision-making processes that led Italy to abandon the Triple Alliance and join the Triple Entente, to shift from neutrality to war to the difficult negotiations of the Peace Conference, until the partial realization of the national goals. This historical exhibition – organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with the participation of the Historical Archives of the Presidency – is hosted in the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin. The exhibition is the result of intense research conducted by the archival staff of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the scientific advice of Professor Italo Garzia (Professor of History of International Relations at the University of Bari). The selected documents from the Diplomat Archive and from the Archive of the Presidency of the Republic include pieces of exceptional and historical value, such as the Treaty of the Triple Alliance, the Treaty of London, the declaration of war on Germany and the Peace Treaties of Versailles and Saint-Germain. Professor Garzia will be in Berlin, as curator of the exhibition, to hold the opening address at the inauguration tonight at the Institute. (Red)
