(29 February 2016) Professor Marco Meleti, researcher within the Department of Biomedical, Biotechnology and Translational Sciences at the University of Parma, directed by Professor Marco Vitale, will represent Europe at the World Health Organization (WHO) Forum on oral cancer, scheduled for 4-5 March in New York. Professor Meleti has delt for years with the subject matter as a component of the Pathology and Oral surgery team led by Professor Paolo Vescovi. Oral cavity carcinoma constitutes a global emergency and the WHO thus set up a permanent forum, the “Global Oral Cancer Forum”, which will officially launch its activities in New York on 4-5 March. Experts from around the world will meet to discuss critical issues and innovations related to the prevention, treatment and new technologies to cope with this disease whose incidence is steadily increasing, as evidenced by the most recent epidemiological data. The decision to select Parma as European representative is not accidental. Over the past three decades, Professor Vescovi gave life, together with his collaborators Professor Maddalena Manfredi and Professor Meleti, to a research group on oral disease celebrated across Europe. Parma has a long-established collaboration with dentistry specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery (Professors Enrico Sesenna, Silvano Ferrari, Tito Poli and Bernando Bianchi MD) and Anatomical Pathology (Professor Enrico Maria Silini, and Luigi Corcione MD) that allows for a diagnostic and therapeutic approach of potentially malignant lesions and malignant tumors of the head and neck aligned with the most advanced world standards. Recently, the Department strengthened its result delivery with the opportunity of having access to advanced clinical and research facilities in the Dentistry University Centre directed by Professor Mauro Bonanini, and in the Dentistry complex structure of the University Hospital directed by Professor Silvia Pizzi.
