Jan. 8 – Rouen, a city in northwestern France, will host the April 3 ceremony of the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) that brings Italian excellence abroad. Professor Alberto Broggi, of the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Parma and CEO of VisLab srl. Broggi will be in the engineering and scientific research center to celebrate the thirtieth year of INSA activities. He will receive the title of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) honoris causa in computer vision for his long and thorough research on the application of computer vision in the field of intelligent vehicles, which profoundly influenced the field of vehicular robotics helping define a number of milestones for automatic guided vehicles. Some basic techniques for the interpretation of the surrounding environment of the vehicle have been developed and demonstrated: the first test in the world (2000 km on Italian motorways) in low cost semi-automatic mode systems in 1998; the participation and success in the DARPA Challenges; the first and only test of automatic intercontinental driving (from Parma to Shanghai in July-October 2010); and finally the first completely automatic driving test on public roads open to traffic in the urban environment, which took place in July 2013.
