(6 April 2016) The world is in turmoil: what foreign policy for Italy? This question – as complex as current – will kick off a debate tonight at the Italian Institute for Culture Brussels headquarters (Rue de Livourne 38). Organized by the IIC, the meeting scheduled for today (at 7 PM), was born on the occasion of the presentation of the ISPI Report 2016 “New cracks in world governance”. The report has already been a debate starter in various Italian cities and, this year, has made a stop-over even in major European capitals. IIC guests in Brussels will be: Antonio Villafranca (Head & Senior Research Fellow – European Programme ISPI), Beda Romano (Brussels correspondent for Il Sole 24 Ore) and Alessandro Colombo (Professor of International Relations – University of Milan, and curator of the Report). After the Belgium event, the Report will be presented in Bari (April 20 at the University of Aldo Moro) and Lecce (April 21 at the University of Salento). The ISPI work in recent days offered food for thought in Italy and abroad: it has already been presented in Milan, Rome, Bologna, Paris, Brescia, Torino, Palermo, Naples and Trieste. But that’s not all: the ISPI Report 2016 has been presented even in New York, on March 20 (United Nations). The increasing number of political and economic cracks is highlighting the inadequacy of existing instruments of governance. The lack or delay of concerted responses deepens existing fractures and is likely to create new ones, as is happening in recent months in the face of Syrian Civil War or the migration crisis in Europe. Italy, in particular, appears on the front line in the face of these challenges trying to adapt its foreign policy to the ongoing crisis in the multilateral contexts that constitute its traditional sphere of reference. To these themes is dedicated the report made with the contribution of the Cariplo Foundation – which for the second year includes a report card of Italian foreign policy, drawn up on the basis of expert evaluations of a panel of 130 experts.
