Lisbon – Thursday, April 14 at 7:00PM, the Italian Cultural Institute of Lisbon will inaugurate a new exhibit, “Gli alberi si rivelano,” featuring artist Roberto Almagno and curated by Lorenzo Canova. As part of a series of exhibits dedicated to Italian contemporary art, the event will feature the artist, as well as the curator, who will provide an overview of the artist’s life and work. Poems in Italian and Portuguese by Fernando Pessoa will be read. “In Almagno’s work, like in Pessoa’s poetry, trees reveal themselves in a particular way: nature becomes like a dream within the calm, within the quiet admiration of things,” said Canova. Almagno, who is a sculptor, was born in Aquino in 1954. At a very young age, he moved to Rome where he attended the Istituto Statale d’Arte, as well as sculpting courses at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, where he met Pericle Fazzini. After various experiments with a range of materials in the 1980s, he became interested in wooden sculpture, which became the hallmark of his work. Almagno’s sculptures are on display, among others, at the Palazzo Massar in Ferrara, the Centro per la Scultura Contemporanea Torre Martiniana in Cagli, the MuMi in Francavilla al Mare, the Musma, Museo della Scultura contemporanea in Matera, at the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, at Nissan Italy, in the Farnesina collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and in numerous private collections.
