(June 1, 2016) The Norwegian Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anders Anundsen took part in the ceremony to unveil the first of 16 AW101 helicopters for search and rescue (Search and Rescue – SAR) destined for Norway. The ceremony took place at the Leonardo-Finmeccanica facility in Yeovil, UK where the AW101 is produced, the best seller in its category with more than 220 units ordered and where the AW159 new naval helicopter is also produced and has already found commercial success in the United Kingdom and internationally. “This ceremony – said Minister Anundsen – marks the achievement of an important goal. The helicopter is an important and crucial resource for Norwegian rescue services and it is now complete and ready for testing. I am very pleased with the commitment shown so far by Leonardo Helicopters “. According to Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters Daniele Romiti added “the AgustaWestland AW101, in this latest configuration, can be considered the most advanced search and rescue helicopter in the world. The peculiar combination of cabin space, excellent performance, ability to operate in all weather conditions, sensors and state of the art mission equipment gives this aircraft unmatched capabilities. We look forward to starting deliveries next year and to assist the entrance into service of new aircraft to perform their tasks in SAR replacing the Westland Sea King helicopters, which have flown in Norway saving thousands of lives for 40 years. ” Deliveries of the helicopters to the Royal Norwegian Air Force, who will operate the AW101 for the Ministry, will begin in March 2017 and continue until 2020. As part of the contract the ‘ready use’ support services including spare parts, technical assistance and training will also be provided, for 15 years. (Red)
