(2 June 2016) Pizzarotti & C. S.p.A. is the Italian company that has played a decisive role in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. A source of pride for the country as well as for the company from Parma who took part in the construction of an infrastructure that is unparalleled in the world, in both size and technological design and construction standards. The Pizzarotti Group has participated in three lots equal to 20% of the total works, the amount of works (11 in total) are estimated at about €2 billion: The Embankment Gallery of Bodio (South portal of the S. Gotthard base tunnel), the Discenderia Faido (the login screen for the excavation of the main lot of the Gotthard base tunnel) and the Sedrun tunnel (central lot of the base tunnel). To highlight the role of Pizzarotti in the achievement in the latter lot, is the Sedrun Tunnel whose works lasted from 2002 to 2013. This stretch included the main tunnel as well as technical tunnels and caverns necessary for the realization of an impressive multi-functional station measuring a total of over 28 km of excavated works, distributed to the center of gravity of the base tunnel of 57 km. The Sedrun is considered the most complex intervention carried out from a manufacturing point of view: it has been in construction for 11 years and in extreme conditions from both a human and technological point of view. Pizzarotti continues to be involved in the realization of the Ceneri Tunnel, a natural continuation towards the south of the Gotthard line and soon to be opened, with a secondary role. (Red)
